Any Tokyo bar recommendations?

So I bought my ticket to go to Tokyo next month, and though I'll probably be spending most of my free time playing mahjong with my relatives, there will definitely be times that I want to get away from them for a while. Can anybody recommend some laid-back bars that I can go to by myself without the music stopping and everyone turning their heads to stare at the gaijin the second I walk through the door?

For reference my favorite bar so far is Propaganda in Roppongi because it's a small chill place where it's always the same friendly bartenders interacting with the regulars, but everything else seems to be a large club scene or an izakaya. Is my only hope finding the occasional Irish pub? Oh, and I'll mostly be staying in the Jiyugaoka area, so thinking anything along the lines of Meguro, Shibuya, and Shinjyuku would be fairly close.

That dog statue at Shibuya train station

For those who have been to Shibuya train station, you may know of the dog statue. When I went to Halvsie meet ups in Tokyo, people would often agree to meet at that statue. Today I found out the story about the dog. From Wikipedia:

In 1924, Hachikō was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno didn't return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting.

Hachikō was given away after his master's death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. After time, Hachikō apparently realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachikō waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he didn't see his friend among the commuters at the station.

The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Realizing that Hachikō waited in vigil for his dead master, their hearts were touched. They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.

This continued for 10 years, with Hachikō appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station.

Wow I haven't been on here in ages but since I am currently in Japan I have decided to come out from under my rock and breathe in some of that fresh smelling halvsie air.

A little status update of sorts:

I dropped my IT job back in Canada and I'm now eeking by on a meager living "teaching" English down in Fukuoka. The new eikaiwa I'm teaching at is almost eye-gaugingly irksome since we have a severe lack of students, but hopefully that will improve.

So far I've been here 3 months and although Fukuoka is a beautiful and comfortable city to live in, I am feeling a sense of boredom.

I probably should just get off my computer and hit the rock climbing gym instead of whining but first I must pose a question -- are there other halvsies living down here in Kyushu?

Your half-blooded cohort,

Aaron

Japan in 2 weeks

So I´m heading over to Japan in a couple of weeks time to spend 3 weeks travelling; 2 weeks travelling with a mate from Australia and 1 week in Sapporo to spend time with the relos.

I haven´t travelled around Japan doing the touristy thing since I was about 14 years old and did it with my parents. I´ve knocked together a tentative itinerary trying to cram in as much as comfortably possible but am not sure if I´ve missed a nice place or am spending too much time in another.

This is my plan so far......any comments? I´ve got a 14 day JR pass and want to use it as much as possible.

16/5 Arrive Narita in the evening, stay in Tokyo overnight
17/5 Tokyo to Hiroshima
18/5 Hiroshima
19/5 Hiroshima to Himeji
20/5 Himeji to Osaka
21/5 Osaka
22/5 Osaka to Kyoto
23/5 Kyoto (Nara)
24/5 Kyoto
25/5 Kyoto
26/5 Kyoto to Hakone or any onsen that´s nearby
27/5 Tokyo (Yokohama)
28/5 Tokyo
29/5 Tokyo
30/5 Depart Tokyo for Sapporo

I´ve never been to Osaka before but is it really worth while visiting?(dont mean to offend anyone from Osaka). My impression is that its just another big city. Is it worth trying to squeeze in either Fukuoka, Kobe, or Nagoya?

Also, it´d be good to meet some of you Tokyo halvsies while I´m in town if anyone´s free.
