Help me understand Japanese culture

This afternoon I was watching a DVD upstairs and my neighbor dogs were wildly barking (there are four of them) and weren't stopping. So, thinking it wasn't the normal mailman or neighbor's visitors, and I'm expecting a package, I went downstairs, out the back door and looked over the railing of my deck and there were two older people, not old but older than me. The woman was with her dog who was urinating on a pile of leaves behind my husband's car, and the man was smoking a cigarette, out of street view, in my private parking area. I was shocked. I proceeded to thank the dogs for being noisy and letting me know somebody was there, in Japanese, and the woman waved at me. I really didn't know what to do. Is this common? She may have known the neighbor across the way but they have no business being in my area. If they come again I will tell them they are not to let their dog go to the bathroom in my parking area. Is this a normal thing? Am I supposed to smile and wave back?

If you see a suspicious gaijin....

Surfing the web today and came across an article about how Osaka police department are putting up this poster. It states:

Help prevent illegal aliens and illegal laborers.
Before you hire a foreigner, check their credentials and make sure that the are in Japan legally.
Over stayers (people who have expired visas) are considered illegal aliens.
Business owners will also be prosecuted for hiring illegal aliens.

IF YOU SEE ANY SUSPICIOUS FOREIGNERS, CALL 110 (POLICE EMERGENCY LINE) IMMEDIATELY.

I had no problems with the first part of it because I do agree that illegals have no right being here, HOWEVER, this poster was being posted in residential areas and apartment buildings, instead of labor offices like they should be.

And of course, the last line is just so wrong in 18 different ways. How do distinguish whether a person looks suspicious or not? To a lot of people, foreigners are suspicious by default. I can already see the 110 switchboard lighting with "suspicious gaijin sightings"

racialism and halvsies

IMO, to integrete foreign elements on what the meaning of being mixed in an homogeneus or heterogeneus population, measures should be taken to accomodate them, that contribute to said goal. Racialism, an emphesis on the most forbiden consideration of all—that of racial realitiwes, particularly the differences that exist among races—at least to all politicians and especially those who aspire to great heights, namely high positions in the government, politicians whose hypocrissy is the bread cherished and needed in order for them to survive in the political world, as a politician, should sway politics. In particular, one aspect of measures that must be taken by all government concerns and implies racialism. Racialism is often stigmatized by politicians and the media as relating to racism when the 2 are very distenct—albeit the contrary can be argued, based on certain definitions—the same way affirmative action differs from anti-miscegenation laws; in fact, racialism don't imply hatred per se as racism do But ignorance, of a different type than that of racism, makes the flock despise it because of its stigma, the same way as an innocent is brought to the guillotine and the crowd cheers for his execution. however, racial realitis must be handled with extreme caution so as to not cause any harm; the road in politics is undoubtedly narrow, but even more so to racialism proponants as theirs anywhere may lead to an abyss awaiting a misplaced step. As the distribution of inteligence varies in and between ethnic groups, measures should be taken to place more less intellectually gifted individuals in the primary and the secondary sectors to the detriment to those who are not. This should contribute to the integration of certain groups of foreigners who do not inherit the same intelectual capital as the majority, especialy in well education-oriented nations of East Asia, specifcally japan. Also, prarogatives should be expanded to include certain rights pertaining to the practice of interacial marriage giving birth to bi-racial children which would advocate special access to mental health services. The curiculum should be revized in certain fields of medicine, especially phsychiatry, a practice of lengthy procedurs and great difficulties, to take into account racial differences and finding proper procedures to deal with certain ethnic individuals. The state should give first consideration to the worst-off members of the community and racialism is the proper step to the recognition of these people and the initiation of an increase in governmental aid. racialism nd the contrery thereof needs to be judged in a court and a trial must be held therein in order tosettle the dispute between its proponent and its detractor once and for all. this trial will be held in front of a jury while both parties participate in an exchange of arguments presidid by the judge, and its fate will be decided by the members of the jury present here, who must render an impartiel verdict.

Hollywood Colonialism

Aside from the mind boggling casting of the typical generic hollywood white guys as Mach GoGoGo, AKIRA, and lastly as Goku...They use the alien excuse to cast Goku as a White guy, but then they cast his love interest, who in the animated version looks no different than goku in facial feature, in the upcoming movie as an Asian woman .

Hollywood flicks we see mostly see Black-Black couples, or Latin-Latin couples, but Asian women are always paired with a White guy. It seems like most TV shows and movies in the past ten years exclusively pair an Asian girl with a White (or Black) guy romatically. Asian men are being completely suppressed and excluded in television and film.

No Asian actresses are willing to object to the scripts, or fight against these negative stereotypes. They don't understand the power of TV/film to mold the way people think.

These shows affect kids. Teens, especially girls, judge themselves on others' opinions, and are easily influenced. Young, insecure Asian girls are conditioned through social norms/media to 'act White' and want only White men (self hate), and young Asian American boys growing up in the US are conditioned to think they are unattractive, or become shy or unassertive. Some Asian youth resolve identity conflict by developing self-hate and bashing their heritage, family, and people (ex 'I won't date Asians', or criticizing other Asians).

Whether it be fashion magazines, gossip mags, TV, movies, or our friends, all of us are influenced and emulate in some way what we see on screen. Entertainment can be as influential as advertising, product placement, or branding. So many shows and movies in America demean Asian men, while perpetuating an 'Asian Girl Fetish' in this country. It is Hollywood Colonialism.
