Are games art?

While this is certainly nothing new, Roger Ebert has once again reiterated his claim that video games cannot be "art."

http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a215023/ebert-games-can-never-be-art.html

What do you think?

I certainly have my own opinions on the subject. A lot of gamers do tend to conflate "good entertainment" with "art," but what exactly is art? How does one define it?

And as much as I respect Ebert's opinions on movies (even if we don't always agree), the fact that he is ready to pass judgment on an entire medium without having actually studied that medium is disappointing.

If Your Life Was A Playlist

If your life was a compilation of various songs to represent your life, which songs would be on it? (<del class='bbc'>try to go with a maximum of 10</del>... edit: maximum is now 20)

for me i would have:

Black Glasses by Angela Aki, to describe my black glasses and shyness

てがみ〜拝啓　十五の君へ〜 (a letter, dear 15 year old you) also by angela aki, because its a sad song, but its hopeful and encompasses a lot of hard to deal with stuff people go through

Anthems For a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl by Broken Social, because it reminds me of growing up

Hopeless by KT Tunstall, because i really feel trapped and hopeless a lot

Do You Believe In Magic by The Loving Spoonfuls, because it's really up beat and it reminds me of the time when i though really anything could happen

Sleep by Meiko, because I am usually in desperate need of some =__=;;

Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine (thanks for showing me this one ninjew!) becuase its one of those perfectly romantic songs that reminds me of being in love

Forever Young by Alphaville because I want to be young forever

With a Little Help From My Friends by The Beatles because we all need friends

and lastly L'amour ne dure pas toujours by Feist, because like the title says, love doesn't last forever

how about everyone else? Which songs represent your life?

Better than the real thing?

Most of the time when I hear a cover song I usually think they're an inferior repeat of the original, and just an attempt to make some easy cash.
Oscars 09

I'm usually not that fond of the kind of movies that win a lot of Oscars. But since I'm bored, I like discussing movies, and speculation in general, I thought I would start this thread.

What movies, actors and directors do you think will win this year?

Who do you think deserves to win? Maybe a movie you thought was great, but didn't get nominated..

Does it influence your opinion of a film if you hear that it has won an oscar? Does it make you more inclined to want to see it?

This is a list of this years nominees in the major categories:

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Richard Jenkins for The Visitor
Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn for Milk
Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie for Changeling
Melissa Leo for Frozen River
Meryl Streep for Doubt
Kate Winslet for The Reader

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Josh Brolin for Milk
Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt
Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams for Doubt
Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis for Doubt
Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei for The Wrestler

Best Achievement in Directing
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire
Stephen Daldry for The Reader
David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant for Milk

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year
Bolt
Kung Fu Panda
WALL·E

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year
Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (2008)(Germany)
Entre les murs (2008)(France)
Revanche (2008)(Austria)
Okuribito (2008)(Japan)
Vals Im Bashir (2008)(Israel)

I have only seen a few of these films so it's hard for me to say who deserves to win. But from the speculation in the media it seems like Slumdog millionaire and Kate Winslet are the biggest favorites in their respective categories.
I'm a bit surprised that Robert Downey Jr got nominated. I think he's a good actor, but I didn't think Tropic Thunder was that special, a pretty average comedy imo. And surely not the best performance of his career.

Has anyone seen the Japanese film Okuribito that is nominated in the best foreign language category?

Who do you think is the most famous halvsie??

I know "halvsie" by definition here is only people who are half Japanese, but since there arent too many famous half-asian people to begin with, I think it would be better to ask the more broad question, "who do you think is the most famous hapa??" And to make things clear, im talking about people that the average Joe knows is half Asian.

I think the most famous halvsie under the narrow definition is Sean Lennon, who everyone knows is the product of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
But, I would have to say the most famous hapa is either half-Chinese Tommy Chong from the Cheech and Chong movies or half-Korean Hines Ward, the future hall-of-famer Pittsburgh Steelers receiver.

The one person that I think beats all these people in fame is Keanu Reeves, but nobody knows hes half asian! So, he doesnt count. I sometimes wonder how he could be sooo pale being a hapa, he looks almost sickly.

I wish more Asians would try to get famous. Hapas have to get their priorities straight.
