I can't find this topic, so I'm creating this thread.

Just wanted somewhere where users can suggest additions to the famous halvsies list.

Here's my addition to the list just off the top of my head:

Fujiko Hemming - music - Pianist
http://www.fujiko-he...file/index.html

Koji Murofushi - sports - Olympic hammer thrower for Japan. Japanese Father was also Olympic hammer thrower for Japan, Romanian mother was Olympic javelin thrower for Romania. http://www2.aia.pref...ocal_voice.html

Ivonne Kanazawa - sports - Olympic hurdles runner for Japan in the 90s

Yu Darvish (sp?) - sports - Japanese mother, Iranian father (soccer player). Ace pitcher for Tohoku highschool baseball team. He's been competing at the super high-profile National Highschool Baseball Championships at Koshien the last couple of years.

Robert Cullen - sports - Japanese mother, North Irish father. Striker for Ichiritsu Funabashi highschool soccer team. Won the National Youth Soccer Championship this year, also represented Japan in a youth level game.

Also, Namie Amuro has just released a new album called Style.

Will try to look for their details when it's not 2am JST :P

i believe, doug robb from hoobastank is japanese and white. also, dean cain is 1/4 japanese (not really a halvsie, i suppose).

there are actually quite a few non-japanese hapas that are hapa that most people never knew.. like mark-paul gosselar (indonesian hapa), norah jones (indian hapa), rob schneider (filipino hapa), and michelle branch (indonesian hapa).

EDIT: nevermind, doug robb is on the celebrities section. dur!

Is Richard Gere listed here? He's 1/4...

Also, Chris Kuroda... 1/2 Japanese... he does the lights for the band PHISH... and if you've ever been to a PHISH show, you'll know, his lights are fantastic. You've never seen anything like it! :P :P

Oh yeah, Ilmari of Rip Slyme (J-hip hop group) is half-Finnish and half-Japanese. And Nesmith (sp? Nesumisu in katakana) Ryuta Karim of R&B duo Steel is half-black and half-Japanese born and raised in Kumamoto and can only speak Japanese, apparently.

And I think Crystal Kay should get an honourable mention. Even though she's half-African American and half-Korean, her Korean mother, I believe, is zainichi permanent special visa holder in Japan. So, essentially her mother is Korean-Japanese, the Japanese government just don't give away citizenships that easily... Apparently Crystal has released an all English album for the world audience already...

HapaKristina-san,

Yes, I read an interview with Richard Gere in the Buddhist Review back in either '96 or '97. He was asked which relative had the most influence on him, and he said, his Japanese Grandmother. I see it in his eyes and cheeks!

Hmm... that may explain why Gere participated in the Kurosawa's final film. It was a syrupy one and he was an apologetic former American soldier in Japan. It was Rhapsody in August, not sure why the critics liked it... maybe a bit like Last Samurai? :P

Taro Nihei - Nippon Seishi Cranes - Japanese and Swedish - Forward - oops I guess he's back in Japan
Jiro Nihei - Nippon Seishi Cranes - Japanese and Swedish - Goalie - Nihei brothers' father runs a sushi restaurant in central Stockholm
Daniel Daikawa - Kokudo Lions - Japanese and American - Defenseman

Since then, he's gained a lot of recognition and he picked up a contract with Muscle and Fitness magazine and you can see him in there regularly and on ads.

Etienne Ozeki

Born in Afrika, son of a French mother and Japanese father.
He is a designer of denim goods.

ETIENNE OZEKI - PREMIUM JEANSWEAR

Etienne Ozeki is the leading light and a brainchild of three denim lovers from Purple Pin Designs. They are Farook Jamal, Richard Hobbs and Ben Cheung.

Wanting to use their many years of experience in designing and developing jeanswear concepts for customers around the world the Etienne Ozeki brand concept was conceived.

Etienne Ozeki, or EO, is not a standard jeanswear collection. The brand uses inventive styling, innovative fabrics and treatments, and delivers a new aesthetic in denim.

Etienne is the fourth member of the team. He represents a combination of the other members experience, energies and aspirations. Etienne is the benchmark of quality, design and execution for the brand and is the final decision maker.

Farook Jamal, Managing Director said, & In August, 2001, Etienne Ozeki will launch its Autumn/Winter 2001 denim and jeanswear collection. These premium jeans, jackets, shirts, sweaters and knits feature many exclusive styling details and adventurous hand finishing application. All garments are unique, which is why Etienne Ozeki has limited its volume of production. According to Farook, the collection is being selectively marketed and only a handful of independent specialty retail customers in each country are being sought as retail partners.

EO& The Etienne Ozeki look is handcrafted, original, natural, individual and organic. All fabrics in the first collection are natural fibres such as cotton, linen and hemp. Sweaters and knits are made from both wool and cotton.

The core of Etienne Ozeki& Highlights of the collection are treated denim, over distressed denim washes and hand finished treatments.

The Autumn/Winter 2001 Etienne Ozeki Collection will be launched in the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Japan and Hong Kong.

Money Mark---keyboardist, works with the beastie boys.

Good music!!

Japanese/Mexican

http://www.moneymark...rkrockhands.jpg

"Mark’s music is the unique production of a musician unafraid to investigate new possibilities with old sounds. His first solo album, the much lauded “Mark’s Keyboard Repair”, is evidence of a rare ability to meld a multitude of styles - Blues, Jazz, Psychedelic Funk, Hip- Hop - into groovy musical excursions that all bear the stamp of innovative, laid-back cool. Money Mark is not an ordinary musician. But then Mark is not exactly what you would call an ordinary guy. The son of a Japanese aeronautical engineer and a Mexican who loves Jazz, he suggests that the roots of his musical eclecticism are to be found in the unusual cultural dynamics of his childhood: “Something like “Mark’s Keyboard Repair” comes about because my father’s an electronic engineer - so he taught me about electronics and technical things - and my mother kinda has the more dramatic, emotional side. The combination of the two really helped me to be something else - the sum of the two or whatever...a synthesis.”

Okay I found another one while reading "Shocking crimes of Postwar Japan" an English book I bought at kinokuniya.

Kiyoshi Okubo who coincidentally shares the same last name as me :gag: , is 1/4 Russian. His mother Kinu was the illegitimate offspring of a Japanese man and a Russian woman.

Okubo was a serial rapist and killer, a playboy type who posed as an English teacher or artist and would coerce women to model for him or go for a cup of tea. Over a span of sixty-four days he approached approximately 150 females of whom more than on third agreed to spend time with him. Okubo murdered eight of his victims.

Some brief research on the web provides that there was a made for TV movie about Okubo in the 80's starring none other than Takeshi Kitano.

Reviving this thread as I feel the need to make one addition to the celebrity halvsie list - who is arguably the original uber-hottie-halvsie New York/Tokyo scenester - rather surprised this one hasn't been included yet; guess that means there aren't many jazz/soul/house fans here? Bio off the top of my head...

Monday Michiru - daughter of Boston sax legend Charlie Mariano (collaborated with the likes of Sam Rivers, Quincy Jones, Astrud Gilberto) and jazz piano queen Toshiko Akiyoshi (discovered by Oscar Peterson in Japan in the 50s, went on to work with Norman Granz, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, countless others; other honors and Grammy nominations galore). Did movies and TV for a while, better known as a radio personality, but above all else best known as an accomplished and incredibly versatile musician - vocals and instuments, production as well as remixing and DJing. Is perhaps best known at present through the myriad of remixes of her work, and her collaborations with some of the biggest international names in house and downtempo (Masters At Work and Nuyorican Soul crew, System 7, Basement Jaxx, Francois K/Joe Claussell & Body&Soul NYC, Blaze, Mo Wax et al., Knee Deep), and pretty much all the biggest names in said genres in Japan (DJ Krush, United Future Organization, Mondo Grosso, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Bird, Chari Chari, Wyolica, to name a handful). Aforementioned credentials are just what I know out of what I have, and I don't even buy vinyl... I'm sure they've got it covered at her site, which Google says is here:

http://www.mondaymichiru.com/

A couple years back she did this brilliant, brilliant loungy cover of "I Wanna Be Where You Are" - classiest Jackson 5 cover EVAR.

A lot of the hapa models in JPN are Brasilian or American. I have a few friends who model in Tokyo and one of them, Vivi Ohno of Brasil, was one of the most famous around 10 years ago but I don't have any fotos of her. This is her good friend Ligia Benica, also a Brasilian JapaHapa who does a lot of work and married to another JapaHapa friend of mine who is pictured w/ her:

These two girls are Brasilian "halvsies" as well, Vanessa Handa and Yuki Minakawa, this foto is not good as it was taken w/ an "antique" digicam:

Some of the agencies in Japan actually go to Sao Paulo to recruit these girls. http://www.urbanagen...els/models.html represents a lot of hapa

models/celebs but there are other agencies in Tokyo which does as well, one that comes to mind is Spacecraft.

Some, like Rie Miyazawa are recruited in Harajuku and other places in Tokyo.

We've got one of those in my hometown, Chera Kimiko, I'm pretty sure she's hiding her surname.

Chera Kimiko, FOX23 Anchor On FOX23 News, Chera Kimiko will give you invaluable information about the latest health concerns. From major illnesses around the world to common bugs right here in Green Country, Chera Kimiko hunts down important health stories to help keep your family well. Watch her Health Alert very weeknight on FOX 23 News.

In 2001 Chera won the Russell L. Cecil Medical Journalism Award for her story "Joints In Motion." Chera was the National Winner in the Television Category, and was honored to become the first reporter/anchor not working in a top 20 market to be granted this award by the Arthritis Foundation. The Cecil Award is given to journalists for excellence in medical journalism. Also Chera's nine o'clock newscast was nominated for a regional emmy for best newscast.

Chera studied at Richmond University in Kensington, England and later at Colorado State University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts. Her journalism career began in news radio, at KHOW in Denver, Colorado, and she made the jump to television when she accepted a job at KYMA in Yuma, Arizona. After a crazy year as a brand-new reporter, Chera was hired by KTVK--the number one-rated news station in Phoenix--where she worked as a reporter for nearly three years.

In 1998 Chera was offered the opportunity to anchor, so she left the desert for the maritime breezes of the Santa Barbara area in California. And her last job before she moved to Tulsa was a two-year stint as the weekend morning anchor at KVBC in Las Vegas, where she was voted one of the top three favorite local anchors.

Chera loves to exercise and in January ran her first marathon in Orlando. She chose this event to benefit the American Stroke Association and also to honor her stepmother and grandmother, both of whom recently had strokes. Chera is also a former competitive figure skater and still loves to get on the ice.

It's great!

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.
The world

A rose will bloom
It then will fade
So does a youth.
So does the fairest maid.

Don't forget Olivia. Sadly, she's not making it big at all having that freakin' druggy as a producer. I remember seeing her at this highschool music festival from a far and I was like "DAYNG, she's cute!" I was friends with her sister Caroline though. She has more Japanese eyes but still cute.

Also, this guy needs to get some attention too from the classical world. His name is Brian Asawa and he's one of the top leading counter-tenors in the world. His voice is unlike any other typical counter-tenor's voice and is rich and full. He grew up in southern California and now he's all around Europe because he's sought after constantly by many opera companies.

Ed Suzuki, an architect. I only know this because I read about him in the paper and I thought, I know this guy!!

He's a haafu too right?
He kind of looks like a famous movie villain in real life.
Not a bad ball player too considering he's about 40 years older than me!

When did you start playing hoops out there, Daniel? Matter of fact I do know Ed, not well, but we've spoken. I used to go out and play on Sundays too, but it's been a while.

Some of my homeskillets out there are Chris (half black/Chinese dude who runs the floor and jumps well), Bob Sato, Steve (dude from Iowa, short, probably plays point) and some other guys who don't go out so much, e.g. Tai Katoh.

Just remember Ed loves the baseline jumpers. biggrin.gif He'll never pass one up if he's out there.

They are actually both good friends of a close friend of mine. And both used to work in Tokyo, Hattori as CBS's correspondent and Dalton was doing a news show on NHK, and former CNN correspondent May Lee was on that show, as was current CNN reporter Fred Katayama.

But no, if you meet James Hattori you will be able to tell he's 100% Jpnse. He's very tall though, about 6'3" I guess...

6 of the 8 Asian League teams, including Nikko, will be at Yoyogi on the 15th and 16th of January for a series of

Some old haafu school friends were pretty famous models in the 90's.

really, he is an asshole. I saw some tv show in Japan awhile back and there was some girl who was obsessed with

Brad Pitt. so, they somehow managed to get in touch with Steve Segal and because of his Hollywood connections he

told the girl he would relay her message to Brad Pitt. he then proceeded to talk about how small her boobs were

and finding other faults to make fun of her with.

I saw

a famous Half Japanese model in Velfarre last night!
I don't know her name but I recognised her from

something.
Damn, daredakke?
She was even looking at me with that "isn't that guy haafu?"

kind of expression (at least I think so).

I think my friend Bobby knows her so I'm going to ask him

to introduce me. wink2.gif

Have we had Rowland Krishima yet?

I saw him in an ad for a Japanese car and thought that guys looks haafu, but he

isn't a very good looking model blink.gif

It turns out that he's a photographer and not a model, so I wonder

what he was doing in a major car commercial.

fluent in Japanese (I think she is..her Japanese in Kill Bill sounded very good at least). smile.gif

Actually I don't think Julie Dreyfus grew up in Japan. I thought she studied Nihongo in college and came

over straight after graduating? She didn't go to the "French School" in Ichigaya, did

she?

from imdb.com:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0237838/bio

Mother is French actress Pascale Audret,

who tragically died in a road accident in July 2000. Julie has stuggled to come to term with it

since.

Maternal uncle is legandry French singer-songwriter Hugues Aufray who is known as the French

Bob Dylan.

Her parents divorced in 1973, after 8 years of marriage

Father is music producer

Francis Dreyfus, founder of Dreyfus Records.

So those items in bold ensures she's not part Jpnse,
