Kobayashi’s hot dog record falls

Posted by saren

The annual Coney Island Nathan’s hot Dog eating contest, held every year on 4th of July weekend, and broadcast on ESPN, just got a lot more interesting. Over the past few years it has been dominated by a Japanese national Takeru Kobayashi. This week Joey Chestnut, 22, of San Jose, shattered the record by downing 59 1/2 “HBDs” — hot dogs and buns — during the Southwest Regional Hot Dog Eating Championship at the Arizona Mills Mall in suburban Tempe.

On the weekend of the 4th, it’s going to be a very interesting race to see who reaches 60.

UPDATE: Sounds like Kobayashi has stopped training because of a death in the family. He might not be in this year’s contest.

UPDATE 2: Latest word is that Kobayashi WILL come and defend his title this year.
